Caplan & Earnest Names Melissa Barber Education Law Practice Group Leader

Melissa Barber

Caplan & Earnest has announced that Melissa Barber has been named the leader of the firm’s Education Law practice group. Ms. Barber succeeds Kristin Edgar, who served in that role for five years. Ms. Edgar will continue to provide legal counsel to school districts and other education clients as part of the practice group.

“Melissa is an incredibly talented attorney whose experience and expertise in education law is among the most impressive in our state,” said Ms. Edgar. “Her experience as general counsel for one of the state’s largest school districts, combined with her extensive private practice experience, makes her a terrific choice to lead Caplan & Earnest’s Education Law practice.”

Caplan & Earnest first worked with education clients more than 50 years ago, and over that time, the firm’s Education Law practice group has grown to be the largest in the state. It supports more than half the school districts in the state with a wide range of legal counsel and support services, from providing legal opinions on topics such as special education and risk management, to defending school districts in litigation, to even serving as outsourced general counsel.

Caplan & Earnest has earned a national reputation for its work in the area of education law and has been involved in several landmark legal decisions that have helped shape public education statewide. The firm represents both large urban and small rural school districts, boards of cooperative education services and other local education agencies.
